Google Trends for your business
In this post, we are going to look at what Google Trends is and how you can use it for your business to find content that you may not have thought about for your business.
A few things to keep in mind with Google Trends.
- It is completely Free!
- Although it shows search trends, it does not give exact volume.
To find Google trends you can, of course, enter it in any search engine and you will find it, or click the link to go to it.
The first thing you are greeted with is the panel with all of the day’s most trending topics. This could be useful if you are looking for something to use for your social media posts, but we are focusing on the content generation so we will stick with that. Below is what you should be greeted with when you first see it, obviously it will have topics specific to the time you log on, but you get the idea!
What can you use Google Trends for?
In the video, we use the term ‘Vodka’ and compare it with ‘Vodka.’ But for this post, we are going to presume that Webzlee sells hats. To make things easier we sell specifically baseball caps. Inputting that search today shows us this.
Surprisingly the United States is not top of that list! But what it does show us is a number of searches are being made and the peak time is in May. So if you are selling caps, better stock up before May. The platform can drill down further into Countries as well as subregions. Below we have what the volume is like in the United Kingdom.
This is great data if you are in the business of selling Baseball caps in the UK. It is showing what is being searched for regarding specifically Baseball Caps, and would you have known that Ferarri caps were a popular search term if you had not used Google Trends?
You can drill down even further with this tool and look specifically what people are searching. We can see below that in London, people are specifically looking for Chicago Cubs Caps. You can’t argue with the data!
How to use it for Content Generation?
The example Baseball Cap has been used, but I would like to see what else could be used as a keyword that could generate content. Further down on the page, Google Trends offers suggestions on related searches as well as related topics to the search term. In this case with Baseball Cap it gave us three suggestions:
Baseball Caps | Nike Baseball Cap | Vintage Baseball Caps
Related Topics:
Boston Red Sox | Chicago Cubs | Coastal Carolina University
These suggestions are potential posts that you could develop linking to the products that you sell (or provide), which are current, relevant to the product and shareable content for readers. These things are important for two reasons.
- Google loves unique, quality content which if done correctly can drive the post higher in the relevant searches, which in turn can lead potential customers to your business.
- Quality content that people like will often share it on their social platforms, which in turn can lead potential customers to your business
So my best advice is to have a go. You are the best person to find out what is specific to your business, and the more you use it, the more useful data that you can use for your business and targeted content generation.
If you have any comments on how you used it we would love to hear them!
